Elegy
A poem of serious reflection, typically a lament for the dead.
ELEGY is my visual poem: a collection of photographs paying tribute to lives lost in the epidemic of mass killings worldwide. Each image represents a discrete event. In the last two instances, the victim was a young person known to me.
Debuting at photoLA 2019, and then shown in the more intimate Kopeikin Gallery with additional prints, this show was designed to be a traveling, educational exhibition. From its opening, ELEGY was really affected people. It is now a very interactive experience, as people have shared their stories of pain and loss as well as love and hope with me.
The series intentionally uses a rich color palate, as a nod to the classical painters who were my early heroes. The images were created as the viewer sees them, with neither artifice nor gimmickry. Starting with a remarkable set of circumstances that led to the creation of “A Lily for Orlando / Pulse Nightclub”, the current array ends with “A Lily for Nipsey”, a white lily on a blue field for the LA rapper/community activist, Nipsey Hissle.
These are limited edition prints, in two sizes: 16” x 20” or 30” x 40”. Sales are meant to merely defray costs, not to generate a profit.
If you believe that your school, place of worship, public space, or gallery would be a good fit for ELEGY, please contact me. Nothing would be better than to have it respectfully displayed in the cities and towns where these acts occurred.
